Dating back to 1528, Abecedarium Cafe occupies the oldest house in Ljubljana. Before you stopped in for soup, a certain Primoz Trubar (the 'Father of SLovenian Literature,' no less) lived here (in 1562) and wrote the first book printed in Slovenian. The name of the book? Abecedarium (which means 'an inscription consisting of the letters of the alphabet,' dontcha know). With such a haughty history, the interior is surprisingly unimpressive, but there is a very pleasant courtyard on Ribji Trg. A popular place for thirsty students to stop in or have a snack, Abecedarium actually serves an extensive menu of tasty international nosh and local dishes at a reasonable price. It's also one of the only places in town where you can get a proper brunch.
