National & University Library

The National and University Library contains, in addition to the bevy of books, vast archives of medieval manuscripts, incunabula (what now?) and Renaissance prints; but you'll mostly just want to admire the building. Built between 1936 and 1941, this building is considered architect Joze Plecnik's most important work: a four-story, four wing building in the shape of an irregular rectangle with two inner courtyards. One of Ljubljana's most recognisable facades combines red bricks and stone blocks in variable patterns. Decorative door handles usher guests into the entry hall and on to a monumental central staircase with 32 pillars of black marble, leading to the library's grand reading room. Excellent architectural details include Plecnik's chandeliers and two glass walls which allow natural light to fill the space. Open 8-20, Mon-Fri; 8-14, Sat.
