This former Austro-Hungarian army barracks near the train station was squatted in 1993 and declared an 'Autonomous Cultural Zone.' Consisting of 7 buildings occupying 12,500m2, the site became a communal space for artists, vagrants, junkies, musicians, outcasts and backpackers to exercise their free will and creativity. More power to them. Despite constant challenges from local authorities, Metelkova's organisers successfully turned the area into an alternative culture centre with an incredibly busy schedule of unique and diverse exhibitions, concerts and speaking engagements. By far the liveliest after-dark destination in Ljubljana, Metelkova's venues include the prison-turned-hostel Celica, Galerija Alkatraz (contemporary art), and about 7 nightclubs, including two gay venues. Intrepid travellers should see what's happening on any given night by simply going to find out.
