Triple Bridge

Ljubljana's most beloved thoroughfare is Tromostovje, or Triple Bridge. A bridge has occupied its place over the Ljubljanica since it served as an important medieval transit route between the countries of Northwestern Europe and Southeastern Europe (ie. centuries ago). Today the Triple Bridge connects Preseren Square to the Old Town under Castle Hill. This unique architectural icon was revamped into one of the city's treasures between 1929 and 1932 when two pedestrian bridges were added to the sides of the original stone bridge by Ljubljana's golden boy, Joze Plecnik. Stairwells descending from each of the side bridges lead down to the stone terraces set in the riverbank on each side. Here poplar trees enhance the beauty of Ljubljana's urban axis and one of its most recognisable landmarks.
